View Logs: Dads S1 Episode 8

Episode Title: Foul Play

This episode started off well... Ok the joke about virtual e-sports being lame was... lame... but it was ok.  I see what they were going for atleast.  And to be frank, people do take e-sports too seriously sometimes.  However, what really got the ball rolling was Seth Green's dad saying

"You know, when I was your age I already had a family and left them."

Ok... that was funny.  Atleast I found it funny.  It's a nice twist on what the past generation likes to say to our generation.  Did I go insane?... Did I just find something in Dads... sincerely amusing?  Will... this last?

The answer is no.  Ok, good to see I didn't go insane... you wanna know what the joke after the opening was?

"Yup, scotch definitely tastes better in pajamas"
*laugh track*

You were doing so well Dads... so well... but hey it's atleast a new record!  A full minute without being absolutely horrible!  Yay give yourself a hand... let's go for 5 next time and maybe... *gasp* a full episode without being horrible!  Baby steps I suppose...

The next 5 minutes sucked.  But it sucked in a new way this time.  The show seems to suddenly be throwing in a lot of young kid Disney sitcom style jokes... it's very very bizarre.  I'll give you an example.  Giovanni Ribisi's wife (I don't know any of these character's names by the way and I'm 8 episodes in...) wanted to do something other than complain about other people but Giovanni himself seems pretty content with it... so she "sadly" trots off and puts on a puppy dog face to him and this whole scenario is apparently funny...

Am I... suddenly watching a Disney show?  What is this type of joke doing here?  It's not even really that funny (although funny for kids apparently).  Are the writers running out of ideas by episode 8?  /sigh.  The scene at around 7 minutes actually had potential but it was completely ruined by the obviousness of the situation.  Essentially Giovanni and Seth Green are talking to each other through text messaging and it's funny because they are in the same room.  Ok... this idea has potential.  But the show decided to execute it by having Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi actively stare at each other while doing it.  That just killed the joke for me.  It would have potentially been funny if it was done in a way that's more subtle but the way the show executed it, the whole thing came across as the writers patting themselves on the back by "how topically funny they are".

The plot to this episode isn't even really worth talking about.  The plot isn't as bad as the previous episodes but it isn't really that good either.  It seems like a standard 2 Broke Girls or Two and a Half Men episode.  Which I guess is a step forward?  Anyways, I know I seem a little lazy with this one but trust me.  I've pointed out the only remotely interesting parts of this episode.  The rest is just a hazy blur of boredom.
